What can go inside a wall

Only products rated for in-wall use go inside a wall. A standard power cord never does.

Cable In the wall?
Standard power cord Never
In-wall rated power relocation kit Yes
HDMI rated for in-wall use Yes
A new outlet Electrician work

Which walls allow it

Drywall over wood studs is the easy case: openings are cut at the TV and the outlet, the cable is fished through the stud bays and the plates are patched. Plaster is harder, because cutting it leaves a repair that rarely matches, and masonry has no cavity at all. In condos and townhomes the wall between two homes is often a fire-rated separation wall, and cutting a recessed box or an in-wall run into it is not what anyone should do; the interior partition is the place for any in-wall work.

The power kit starts at an existing outlet

A rated kit has an inlet behind the TV and an outlet low on the wall, joined by in-wall rated cable. It plugs into the outlet already there. It does not add a circuit and it does not replace the electrician for a new outlet.

An in-wall power kit starts at an existing outlet. The kit has its own in-wall rated cable and two plates; it plugs into the outlet that is already there and adds no new circuit.

What the numbers show

  1. Inlet plate Behind the TV, so the set's own cord reaches it without showing.
  2. In-wall rated cable Built and listed for use inside a wall; a standard cord never goes there.
  3. Lower plate Sits where an outlet would, with a short cord and a plug.
  4. Existing outlet The kit takes its power here; a new outlet or circuit is electrician work.
  5. HDMI in the wall Only HDMI rated for in-wall use goes in the bay with the power kit.

The surface alternative

A slim raceway painted the wall color carries the same cables on the surface, with nothing cut. In a plaster house, a rental or a shared wall it is often the better answer. A raceway is a surface finish and not part of the in-wall add.

A surface raceway hides cables without opening the wall. A painted raceway carries cables from the TV to the outlet on the surface; nothing is cut into the wall.

What the numbers show

  1. Raceway run A slim strip painted to match the wall carries the cables straight down.
  2. Cover Snaps on the room side after the cables are in, and takes paint.
  3. Base Fixed to the wall surface with small screws or an adhesive strip in a rental.
  4. Cables HDMI, optical and the power cord all sit in the channel; nothing goes into the wall.
  5. Existing outlet The raceway ends at the outlet already on the wall.

In-Wall Wire Concealment — common questions

How much does hiding wires cost in Fullerton?

About $95–$155 on top of the base range in the estimator, for a rated kit on a drywall wall.

Can wires be hidden in a plaster wall?

Technically yes, but the repair seldom matches the old finish, so a painted surface raceway is the usual choice.
